Would Palestinians be allowed to abandon refugee camps and be allowed to go there to live? Would they give up their dreams of destroying Israel in exchange for the opportunity to create a successful society in their new country?

Hashish is bad for you.

Honestly, if King Hussein had believed these people could become productive citizens of Jordan, he would have been happy to have them and all the UN funding they would have come with. The man was very sharp, and he knew these people much better than I, and perhaps better than anybody else on earth.

King Hussein wouldn’t give the PLO the time of day after they tried to overthrow his government in 1970 (the resulting crackdown was called Black September and a PLO faction took on the moniker thereafter; the same faction carried out the Olympics massacre in Munich 1972). That’s Arafat’s legacy - and Hussein wouldn’t give the Palestinians another crack to dominate and overthrow the Hashemite kingdom, even though many Palestinians live there - both those who were kicked out in 1947 or fled there or were occupied by Jordan from 1948-1967.

At the same time, Jordan has done little to assimilate those Palestinians living there -instead forcing the issue on to Israel and continuing a sad legacy of using the Palestinians as pawns in the great game against Israel.

Both of you are correct, I admit to some probably baseless speculation about the possibility for peaceful intentions by Israel’s adversaries. Must be too much caffeine.

That said - and the additional historical details you added concerning King Hussein and Black September are correct - “Palestinians” still outnumber “Jordanians” in a country whose claim to historical authenticity or even legitimacy has the dubious distinction of being even flimsier than that of the Palestinians themselves. The current King Abdullah seems popular enough despite his family’s foreign origins (they are from Hejaz, now part of Saudi Arabia), but considering what is happening now throughout the Arab middle east, I wouldn’t completely dismiss the idea of his overthrow (by Palestinians) at some point in the foreseeable future. Speaking of history, let us not forget that the first King Abdullah was assassinated in 1951 by a Palestinian who feared he might make peace with Israel. This is the middle east we are talking about, an in many ways not much has changed since then.
